Hoyerswerda wurde seit den 1960er Jahren als zweite sozialistische Modellstadt der DDR ausgebaut und wuchs innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte von einer Kleinstadt auf über 70.000 Einwohner an – vor allem in der Neustadt, die in industrieller Bauweise neben der Altstadt errichtet wurde. Beide Stadtteile sind von einem Fluss getrennt. Seit der Wende hat die Stadt mehr als die Hälfte dieser Einwohner verloren und befindet sich seit den frühen 2000er Jahren in einem intensiven Stadtumbauprozess. Eine immer wieder diskutierte, aber bisher nicht gelöste Aufgabe ist die fehlende Integration von Alt- und Neustadt, nicht nur in baulicher, sondern auch sozialer und kultureller Hinsicht. In diesem Jahr feiert Hoyerswerda ihr 750 jähriges Jubiläum. In der Sommerschule wollen wir vor Ort einen „Brückenschlag“ zwischen Alt- und Neustadt bearbeiten.

Hoyerswerda was developed as the second socialist model city in the 1960s. Within a few decades, the city grew from a small town to over 70.000 inhabitants – mainly in the new town, which was constructed industrially next to the old town. Both parts of the city are divided by a river. Since the fall of the wall, the city has lost more than half of its inhabitants and is undergoing an intense process of urban renewal since the early 2000s. A task that has been discussed again and again but never been solved is the integration of old and new town, not only in terms of the built environment, yet also in terms of social and cultural relations. This year, Hoyerswerda celebrates its 750th anniversary. In the summerschool we will concentrate on the bridging between old- and new town.
