Die heutige Stadt und deren künftige Entwicklung lässt sich ohne Kenntnisse ihrer Stadtbaugeschichte nur eingeschränkt erklären. Dabei sind neben der städtebaulichen Entwicklung vor allem sogenannte driving forces wichtig: soziale und ökonomische aber auch politische und rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen, die das Bild der Stadt prägen. Das Seminar stellt Beispiele der Stadtbaugeschichte aus China, Lateinamerika, Afrika und Nordamerika vor. Gemeinsam werden die driving forces entwickelt und diskutiert. Studierende ergänzen dies um eigene Fallbeispiele und vertiefen es in schriftlichen Hausarbeiten.
Today's city and its future development can only be explained with knowledge of its urban history. In addition to the urban development, driving forces are particularly important: social and economic, but also the political and legal framework conditions that shape the image of the city. The seminar presents examples of urban planning history from China, Latin America, Africa and North America. The driving forces are developed and discussed together in class. Students supplement this with their own case studies and elaborate a graded paper after the seminar.
