ASIAT – ein ehemaliges Kasernengelände in Vilvoorde, nördlich von Brüssel – wird nach Jahren des Leerstands neu entdeckt. Die Stadt Vilvoorde hat das Areal erworben und an lokale Zwischennutzer/innen übergeben, u.a. das Kunst- und Musikfestival HORST. Das Festival bildet den Auftakt einer fünfjährigen Experimentierphase, die mögliche Zukünfte des Areals ausloten und eine ortsspezifische Quartiersentwicklung vorbereiten soll.
Wir setzen uns mit der Transformation des ASIAT Areals auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen und Maßstäben auseinander. Neben lokalen Qualitäten nehmen wir den Kontext der Metropolregion Brüssel in den Blick. Wie kann Vilvoorde auf den steigenden Wachstumsdruck reagieren? Wie können die Potentiale des Kanals integriert werden, der Vilvoorde mit Brüssel verbindet und derzeit unter dem Leitbild einer produktiven Stadt entwickelt wird?
Productive City: Urban Transformation in Vilvoorde/ Brussels
After years of vacancy, ASIAT – a former military site in Vilvoorde, north of Brussels – is about to be reinvented. The city of Vilvoorde has acquired the area and handed it over to local interim users, such as the festival HORST Arts and Music. The festival is part of a five-year experimentation phase, which allows to explore the possible futures of the district and to prepare a site-specific development process.
Dealing with the transformation of ASIAT, we will focus on different topics and scales. Besides local qualities we will consider the metropolitan context of Brussels. How can Vilvoorde respond to the increasing development pressure? How can we unfold the potentials of the Canal, that links Vilvoorde and Brussels and is currently developed under the concept of a productive city?
